GOA Next - a contribution to DiHalt Summer Party 2026
by Extreme (1998) with the help of VVG (2026).

for the ZX Spectrum Next and clones

-------- ------ ----- ---- --- -- - - -- --- ---- ----- ------ ------- --------

This is a Spectrum Next port of well-known 4K intro GOA by the magnificent
Exploder of Extreme Entertainment. Enjoy 50 fps and 16 colors while still being
4 KB in size.

                              Under the hood
                             ================

The intro uses Next's 128x96x16 color mode (Radastan mode) which is perfect
for replacing old good 64x48 "chunky" dithered mode. C2P basically becomes a small
loop that duplicates the nibbles. Vertical resolution is added by the copper, whose
task is to repeat odd scanlines. As an extra visual nicety, a slightly dimmed
palette is used on those repeated scanlines (also set by the copper), which helps
recreate the original "interlaced" look of the intro.

The intro only needs 1MB of RAM so it can run on any ZX Spectrum Next in existence
(including clones of course). It sort of supports 60Hz, in a way that the music and
the flow proceed properly, but effects will be running faster themselves. Also,
unlike the original intro, it does not exit to the OS.

AI was heavily used for reverse engineering the intro and adapting the effects.

Most credits go to Exploder/Extreme Entertainment. I (RCL) only did the porting
and I admit that I still don't quite understand how some of the effects work.

Demo uses UPKRCL, which is based on UPKR by Exoticorn with the decoder being
based on upkr Z80 decoder by Ped/7g.

Expect the sources on github eventually.
